Living with ADHD can be difficult but psychotherapy can help address any issues in a safe, non-judgmental setting, reducing feelings of anxiety, depression and low self-esteem. You can read more about this on my blog post about how counselling can help with ADHD.

ADHD Therapy FAQs

What are the symptoms of ADHD?

The symptoms of ADHD fall into two categories; inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity.  Inattention symptoms include: being easily distracted, finding it difficult to sustain attention, having poor organisational skills, forgetfulness, keeping track of time and losing things amongst others.

Hyperactive and impulsive symptoms include; restlessness, interrupting others, making impulsive decisions, saying things without thinking and many others.

How is ADHD diagnosed?

To diagnose ADHD there must be a number of symptoms (at least 6
for children and 5 or more for adults) each of inattentiveness and hyperactivity/impulsivity.

For children, they must also:

  • Have had the symptoms for at least 6 months

  • Developed the symptoms before the age of 12

  • Displaying symptoms in at least 2 different settings – eg home and school

  • These symptoms have to have a negative impact on their lives – socially, occupationally and academically

  • Symptoms that are not better accounted for by another condition.

For an adult to be diagnosed with ADHD, their symptoms should also have a moderate effect on different areas of their life, such as:

  • Difficulty achieving tasks at work

  • Problems with making or keeping friends

  • Problems with relationships with partners

At present it is thought that ADHD cannot develop in adulthood, therefore if your symptoms have occurred recently, you will not be considered to have ADHD.

Can ADHD be treated without medication?

ADHD can be treated without medication; however, a combination of medication and behavioural therapy often has the best outcome.  Medication is considered safe, is widely and successfully used and has been for many years.  In the UK, however there is a long waiting list to get a diagnosis, without which, medication is unavailable.

Will I grow out of my ADHD?

ADHD is a lifelong condition, that said, symptoms may evolve.  As an example, while a child might present as hyperactive, that hyperactivity may become internalised as an adult. Problems with organisation and time management might be more apparent as an adult.

How does ADHD affect daily life?

ADHD can cause people to have difficulties with time management, emotional regulation, organisation and planning and more.  Apart from these problems, the way people with ADHD might be viewed by others, for example as disorganised, lazy or erratic, can have an overall negative effect on the sufferer’s own self-esteem, which can lead to anxiety or depression.
