Self-Esteem Therapy FAQs

What is self-esteem?

Self-esteem is your overall sense of personal value, self-worth or confidence.  It reflects how you feel about yourself, your abilities and your own worth.

How can I increase my self-esteem or confidence?

To increase your confidence, focus on challenging negative self-talk, setting and achieving small goals, building on your strengths, practicing positive body language, and taking gradual risks outside your comfort zone. Surround yourself with supportive people, take care of your physical and mental well-being, and celebrate your progress. Confidence and self-esteem grows with practice and persistence.

What are the signs of low self-esteem?

Signs of low self-esteem include:

  • Negative self-talk and self-doubt

  • Difficulty accepting compliments

  • Fear of failure or avoiding challenges

  • Constant comparison to others

  • Overly critical of oneself

  • Feeling unworthy of love or respect

  • Lack of confidence in decision-making

  • Seeking approval from others

  • Struggling with assertiveness or setting boundaries

What causes low self-esteem?

Low self-esteem can be caused by factors such as negative childhood experiences, frequent criticism, bullying, unrealistic societal standards, traumatic events, toxic relationships, failure or setbacks, and constant comparison to others. It can also stem from perfectionism, mental health issues, or a lack of positive reinforcement and support.

What is the difference between confidence and self-esteem?

Confidence is the belief in your abilities and skills in specific situations or tasks, while self-esteem is the overall sense of self-worth and value you feel about yourself. Confidence is situational, whereas self-esteem is more about your general self-image and how you perceive your value as a person.
