Addressing Addiction

Imagine being free from your addiction…

If you think that you may have an addiction to a substance or a behaviour, then it will be having a detrimental effect on your life.

Together we can explore the reasons for your addiction, looking at how it has developed and understanding what it is giving you and what it is taking away.

Talking about this in an honest, non-judgmental way will help you to understand how you have used your addiction, usually as a coping mechanism, and help you find new ways to ease your underlying distress.  You can read more about this on my blog post about how counselling can help with addiction.

If you are struggling with addiction, think you are on your way to becoming addicted or are affected by the addiction of somebody close to you, why not get in touch?

Contact me today for a free, confidential and no-obligation telephone consultation and we can start the process.

Addiction Therapy FAQs

How do I know if I am addicted?

Addiction is a state of psychological and/or physical dependence on the use of drugs or other substances, such as alcohol, or on activities or behaviours, such as sex, exercise, and gambling.  You’ll know that you are addicted when you cannot control the use of the substance or the behaviour, despite its detrimental effects on many aspects of your life.

What causes addiction?

There are many factors including; genetic, psychological, environmental, social and developmental which may make somebody more predisposed to developing an addiction.  Finding out why your dependence developed is part of the therapeutic process of overcoming the addiction.

How can addiction be treated?

Depending upon the nature and severity of the addiction there are many ways it can be treated.  These methods range from an inpatient detox for substance use, where the addict is carefully monitored whilst withdrawing from the substance.  Usually, therapy is offered alongside and after this kind of detox.  At the other end of the scale of addiction, talking therapy alone can be enough to help the person in need understand their addiction and develop coping methods to regain control of their lives.

How to support a somebody with an addiction?

Supporting somebody with an addiction can be extremely challenging.  It would be beneficial to educate yourself about the particular addiction, avoiding any blame or shame.  Learn to recognise any symptoms of intoxication or withdrawal and don’t be afraid to ask for medical assistance.  Let the addicted person know that when they are ready to ask for help they will be supported.

Is relapse a sign of failure?

Relapses are common and they can be seen as a learning opportunity – what happened to cause the relapse, and how can this be dealt with differently in future.
