What causes stress?
Stress can be caused by any manner of different things, from something as serious as the death of a loved one to something seemingly as trivial as a parking ticket. Everybody has a different level of resilience, and the different stresses pile up upon each other until they become a problem.
What are the signs of stress?
There are many different symptoms that can be caused by stress, physical, emotional and behavioural. Physical symptoms can include headaches, fatigue, muscle tension, upset stomach, changes in appetite to name a few. The emotional symptoms of stress may include; irritability, mood swings, low self-esteem, anxiety or depression. Finally, the behavioural symptoms might include; procrastination, increased misuse of substances, withdrawing from social interactions, decrease in productivity and so on.
Is stress bad for your health?
As well as the damage done to your physical and mental health from the symptoms listed above, stress increases the amount of a hormone called cortisol to be produced which can lead to other physical problems, such as a weakened immune response or high blood sugar.
When to seek help for stress?
When you begin to notice some of the symptoms of stress, or when it is having an impact on your daily life, it’s time to seek help.
How can I manage stress?
Learning to manage stress can involve making sure that you get enough exercise, eat healthily and get enough sleep. Furthermore, by achieving a good work/life balance can allow you to cope with stress more effectively. Learning to say no to some demands is a skill which will help lower levels of stress in the long run. Other ways to manage stress include; breathing exercises, mindfulness and other relaxation techniques.
